Matomo is the best-known open-source alternative to Google Analytics. When self-hosted, you keep full control over your data; Matomo Cloud is operated, according to the provider, on AWS in Frankfurt (backups in Dublin) and is ISO/IEC 27001 certified. Matomo covers classic web statistics through to heatmaps, funnels and e-commerce tracking and can be configured to work without a consent banner. The cloud starts at €29 per month for up to 50,000 hits; the self-hosted Community Edition is free.
Note on ownership: The software is open source; the company behind Matomo Cloud (InnoCraft Ltd, NZBN 6106769) is based in Wellington, New Zealand. According to the provider, Matomo Cloud is operated on AWS infrastructure in Frankfurt (backups in Dublin) – so the data is located in the EU, but the underlying infrastructure comes from a US hyperscaler. With self-hosting, the data remains fully under your own control.
